"As for not being able to tell my mom for all these years, I can only attribute that to the fact that I care so much for my families well being and emotions, that I didn't want to burden them with this yucky thing that happened so long ago. But I couldn't let it go, and because I am now a mother, I needed the matter validated and talked about. It took you to give me that extra strength to just "Do It". I don't know why, but I found you for a reason, and for that I am so grateful. "

-Dr Sills responds:

Very good! Glad to help you. Just remember that you deserve peace and happiness, too! The idea of burdening others" really ends up being more of a self-imposed "martyrdom" out of your loving good intentions, but tends to hurt you due to whatever pains you hold onto to "protect " others when, in fact, sharing your feelings (like you did) would not be a burden for anyone who truly loves you.

"It has been a while, since I was your client. I wanted to let you know that my wife and I finally settled on the idea of divorce. We are finishing things up now, and hope to have it finalized within a couple of months. I want you to know that the time I had in a professional relationship with you was very valuable. It helped me get to the point I needed to get to."

Thanks!

From: A Couple Married for Twenty Years and in Crisis

My wife and I came to Dr. Sills during the darkest hours of our marriage. We had taken each other for granted for so many years that we had lost sight of each other and the things that had brought us together nearly25 years earlier.

We married right out of college and had our first child immediately. Our second child came 2 years later. Our lives were spent loving and raising our children. Unfortunately, over time we forgot to give each other the things a husband and wife need.

A crisis emerged, and in order for our marriage to survive we needed to meet with someone who could help us to understand what we wanted from and for each other.

My wife chose Dr. Sills because she was a young professional woman that could relate to a working woman today. After meeting her in our first session, I was impressed with her no-nonsense approach to things, and felt she would be objective in her dealings with me as a man.

The sessions were not all easy. My wife and I both had to be willing to throw away the hurt we had inflicted on each other before we could be honest about how we felt and whether we still wanted to be with one another. Dr. Sills has an ability to see through the crap you try to lay out there, and she didn’t allow either one of us to hide behind blame.

She helped my wife to see that my concerns were not unfounded, and that I was a good man. She helped me to realize that I needed to communicate more effectively, and to not just sulk if something was bothering me.

The most important thing Dr. Sills did for my wife and me was to help us strip away the years of neglect and allow us to realize that we loved each other more than ever and wanted to spend our lives together.

I recommend Dr. Sills to any couple that has found themselves in crisis mode, and needs an intelligent, objective and caring friend that can help them find the truth in and for each other.

Dear Dr. Sills,

I am writing this letter to thank you for helping me change my life! For many years I suffered with anxiety in social situations as well as problems eating in a restaurant. These symptoms greatly inhibited my life. My doctor recommended that I seek professional help and, thankfully, I did. After a short time, I found our sessions to allow me to get in touch with my feelings and to rejoin the world. Soon, I was eating in restaurants and was looking forward to socializing. My new friends now tell me I am the most laid back person they know. My life is so much happier and I now feel free to do all the things I missed for so long. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your help. Thanks again…how about lunch some time

I first sought out the services of Dr. Laurel Sills when I began to experience growing levels of anxiety regarding issues of trust, intimacy and commitment.

The work we did together allowed me to confront these issues in an environment where respect, unconditional support and acceptance allowed me to fully open up and get to the root of my problems. This is exactly what I needed to raise my level of awareness and build both my self-esteem and self-confidence. Her straight-forward approach challenged me and kept me focused on creating productive, positive changes and new possibilities for my life.

Dr. Sills’ professionalism and integrity have had a profound impact on my life. Her therapy has resulted in better mental, physical and emotional health for me and has paid great dividends in my life and in my relationships.

I cannot thank you enough for helping me. All the special people in my life know all about “Dr. Sills.” Now, when I talk to people who have or have had problems like myself, I can talk about my past without my eyes being towards the ground. I tell them that there is hope. If they find just one person like you, they will get help. I know it is not easy since I went through a lot of therapists before finding you. But, if they stick with you, they will get help. Take care. You are in my thoughts.

Dear Dr. Laurel Sills,

I am writing to let you know that seeing you did help me to come to the realization that I am where I am in my illness, and that I have to go from here to get better. I was writing while doing my homework for school and my hands got sore. So, I decided to take a break and soaked my hands in my hot wax. I had not used that in a long time and you reminded me of trying it. While I was waiting for my hands to dry, I started my relaxation techniques. Now, I am focused on working to get better, whereas before I think I was still focused on just being a victim. I want to thank you for your support and your insight, along with all the different ideas towards regaining my healthy. I really appreciate it. I would recommend you to anyone needing assistance.

Thanks you.

In July 2003, I developed panic attacks. At first, I had no idea what was going on with my body. I had no appetite, my body would tremble and I would hyperventilate. But that all changed once I met Dr. Sills. She immediately recognized my symptoms and diagnosed me with Panic Attacks. When my other doctors wanted to put me on antidepressants, Dr. Sills suggested that therapy would benefit my situation more without medication. After three months of therapy, twice a week, she got my life back on track and I completed therapy. During that time, I learned how to recognize my symptoms and to know why they were emerging. Now, at the first sign of anxiety, I know how to control it before I have a panic attack. I am so thankful and appreciative for all the work Dr. Sills has done for me. I would recommend her to anyone. She is a great professional, easy to talk to, and she wants to help you get your life back quick.

Dear Laurel:

I want to thank you SO MUCH for speaking at our conference. The evaluation forms are enclosed for you. As you can see, it was a raving review!! Everyone was inspired with your positive energy. We have multiple requests for your return.

Thank you for giving us the inspiration to face the daily grind with a smile. Dealing with difficult patients is a concern for us as we carry on our daily work. It is wonderful to get a look at what goes on from the patient's point of view. You have helped us to utilize this to care for the needs of our patients. At the same time, it will make our jobs easier, too.

We hope you enjoyed your stay in Traverse City.

Very Sincerely,
